Every single one of these doomerism articles is a) 100% bullshit and b) is put there to make the technology seem magical when it's just matrix multiplication

"There are lots of reasons why AI is not acceptable in our community, so there is no reasonable argument for why you’re using it as far as we’re concerned."

"While Buckmaster and Alpƶge were finalizing their own results, they learned that ā€œinformation about our progress had been passed to OpenAI.ā€ When they contacted OpenAI, they were told that OpenAI had already achieved a full proof of the central problem. But when they asked follow-up questions about when OpenAI had begun its research into the problem and how much human input was involved, the answers became more evasive.

ā€œIt emerged that an entire team had been working on the problem,ā€ Buckmaster said, ā€œand that an insane amount of compute had been used…. Eventually, it was agreed that [the first prompt] had been sent in the past few days, after information about our work had reached OpenAI.ā€

If true, that would suggest the OpenAI team had become convinced that Buckmaster and Alpƶge’s approach was the right one, and decided to use its material advantage in computing resources to reach a formal proof first."

It appears that Tristan Buckmaster raising alarms that AI corporations may have snooped on their research so the companies could throw compute at developing proofs for, and gain credit for, advancements in the Navier-Stokes equations. OpenAI then threw a massive amount of compute at the problem, and seemed to try to coerce Tristan into getting credit for it: https://cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/statement.pdf

> I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, ā€œWhy would you ruin your career?ā€ I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was, ā€œIf you don’t want me to be nice, then I don’t have to be nice.ā€

The other day, I wanted to see if alcohol-free port existed. The top search link went to a page of the 20 best alcohol-free ports! Except none of them were port, they were all spirits (not even other fortified wines). The ā€˜AI’ summary described a fictional process for removing alcohol from port and had two citations, neither of which supported the claim. The next 30 pages were all LLM slop that talked about what port is for a long time before saying that there’s no alcohol-free version.

I have been using the web since the mid ā€˜90s and it has never been this bad. Anyone advocating for ā€˜AI’ is advocating for a future where this damage is spread to all facets of life.

Friends, you may have seen this but if not, sharing:

"The LLM-generated proof hinges on a particular mathematical argument that it presented as its own but that actually first appeared in a 2016 paper by Miller and a collaborator."
