On the one end people are being priced out of running web services due to hardware shortages caused by AI, on the other end those who still run web services are being bled dry by AI scrapers essentially stealing compute.
I am a Muslim. I can assure you I have never once in my life felt attacked or called it "anti-Muslim" or "Islamophobic" when someone criticized the government or state of Saudi Arabia, the government or state of Iran, or the government or state of Pakistan.
Because governments and states do not have rights. There's no "universal declaration of states rights." That's not a thing. People have rights, states do not have rights. Banning criticism of states is fascism.
This is a post about Israel.
It seems to me that those who can't see the fundamentally destructive nature of LLMs never fully grasped the miracle that is language in the first place. It is the delicate thread in which we weave meaning, and therefore human connection and purpose. Appropriating and poisoning it for...well whatever they think they're after, is a bonfire on a ship made of its own timbers.
Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets.
I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap.
Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.

I hesitate to say this bluntly, because I know a whole lot of folks on here are actively involved in technical development of one sort or another, and derive both pleasure and a significant part of their identity from that fact. There’s something I think we all need to get clear on, though, and it’s something I myself had to learn the hard way: no tool will liberate us. The achievement of justice cannot be automated, or otherwise outsourced to a technical apparatus of any sort.
You work on tools because that’s what you’re good at, because that’s the way your brain works, because that’s what you enjoy or can get compensated for doing. That’s all as may be. But please, please do not make the mistake of thinking that the tool – any tool, of any sort whatever – will produce “progress.” There is and can be no technical fix for the social-psychological, existential or ontological predicaments that confront us. In the end there is only us, staring back at us from whatever mirror we’ve built.
