The City of Port Phillip has one of the highest rate of road deaths and serious injuries (among similar councils).
Tonight City Of Port Phillip council voted in the Roadmap to Zero: Safe Travel Strategy and Action Plan. Great to hear Cr Libby Buckingham putting the experience and safety of children first; Cr Justin Halliday said "two of the pedestrian road fatalities happened outside my kids school; two of the cyclist fatalities happened on streets I ride down"; Cr Louise Crawford was very blunt "just because this won't solve homelessness or crime doesn't mean that it isn't worth doing, we can walk and chew gum at the same time".
Hopefully this will inform some good interventions down the line--- it shouldn't be so dangerous to walk to school or ride to work.
E-bike and e-scooter share scheme: the City of Port Phillip is running a trial of corrals for parking share bikes and scooters. This is a strategy to get them *off* the footpaths, where they create hazards for pedestrians. There is one already operating near the Metro supermarket on Fitzroy St, pictured. We're looking for suggestions of other places for them to go--- places where you see many bikes and scooters blocking the footpath. We've published our response to the Draft Ripponlea Streetscape design on the blog. Main ideas: include a contraflow lane on Glen Eira Avenue south; reduce speed limits on Glen Eira Rd through Ripponlea shops; traffic calming on Oak Grove to cut down on rat running.

Roadmap to Zero: Safe Travel Strategy and Action Plan will go to a Council Meeting on Wednesday 5 August.
Despite the concerted campaign against evidence based road safety improvements, particularly speed reductions on local roads and dedicated bike infrastructure, consultation showed that our community puts a high priority on safer pedestrian infrastructure and safer cycling infrastructure.
Our community also shows strong support for safer speed limits around schools.

We have a new premier in Victoria, Ben Carroll. A cyclist! maybe a MAMIL. Gabrielle Williams, the (up until now) Active Transport Minister, becomes deputy premier. Supposedly the deputy gets their pick of ministries, and I'd expect her to shift, given her lack of enthusiasm for her current job. Removal of Marine Parade separated bike lanes.
Bicycle Network have wrapped up the user survey. An outstanding 754 responses were received which provides a strong evidence base for future advocacy. The results reinforce what many riders know and have been have been telling Bicycle Network. The main findings were:
70% wanted the protected bike lanes retained (with or without design improvements).
73% said the protected lanes made them feel safer.
Of those who have ridden Marine Parade since the removal, almost two-thirds said their riding experience is now much worse.
Importantly, where people wanted changes, they overwhelmingly called for better-designed protected infrastructure, rather than no protection at all.
The data from respondents will also be used:
* to brief the Department of Transport and Planning and the Minister's office.
* as a case study in our Victorian State Election advocacy.
* as an input to revisiting Marine Parade again in 12 months, once the additional treatments have been completed, to understand how the route is performing.
Thanks to all members and supporters who completed the survey. Having 754 people take the time to share their experiences gives us a much stronger voice when advocating for safer cycling infrastructure.

This is a really fantastic analysis. Key finding: after the protected bike lanes were installed, midblock crashes went down, intersection crashes were up, overall crashes are down (relative to ridership). Ridership is up.
